Lush heads of lettuce, peppers hanging heavily from their stems, plump eggplants, and a diverse array of tomatoes—such fresh produce is no longer a rare luxury in Ngari, Xizang. In Gar County’s ecological agriculture park, rows of greenhouses have brought both “orchards” and “vegetable baskets” to life on the plateau, situated 4,500 meters above sea level.
It has been reported that more than 40 varieties of fruits, vegetables, and flowers are now cultivated here, including watermelons, melons, and cherry tomatoes. As a result, the county’s self-sufficiency rate for vegetables has increased from less than 10 percent to over 40 percent. Notably, the production of leafy greens is largely sufficient to meet local demand.
