Niwu Township in Lhari County, Tibet bids farewell to diesel power generation

2021-01-18

“Close!” At 18:02 on December 27, 2020, with an order from an official in charge of the Niwu Township Project of the Tibet National Grid Lhari County Power Supply Company, the Jinqiao Hydropower Development Co., Ltd. of Tibet Development and Investment Group formally began supplying power to Niwu Township in Lhari County. The entire township bid farewell to diesel power generation.

Niwu Township is more than 100 kilometers from the Lhari County. The area has all dirt and stone roads, along with cliffs, deep valleys, and rapids. With the harsh geological conditions, transportation conditions here are not developed. The 14 natural villages in the township are far apart from each other, and infrastructure construction costs are high. Previously, the people of Niwu Township relied on small diesel power generators for their electricity. The cost of power supply was high, the electricity was unstable, and it was not environmentally friendly, making productions and livelihoods very inconvenient. After the Jinqiao Hydropower Development Co., Ltd. started to supply power to Niwu Township, local people have achieved a transformation from using firewood to heat their homes to livelihoods and lifestyles based on “clean electricity”.
