The 7th Dalai Lama addressed his teacher Ngawang Choden respectfully as "Reting Achetu",who became the first Reting Rinpoch, in the 18th century.
The title "Reting Achetu" has been descended by reincarnation since then and the system of Reting Rinpoche has been inherited for 7 generations by the end of 2013, according to the book entitled Annuals of the Reting Monastery.
The 1st Reting Rinpoche Ngawang Chokden was born in 1677 and passed away in 1751.
Born in Lithang County of Sichuan Province in 1759, the 2nd Reting Rinpoche Lobsang Yeshe Tenpa Rabgye was a very famous Ganden Tripa (elder proficient in Buddhist Sutras) and graced by the Qing Emperor Qianlong with the title Hutuktu Archimen Nomihan.
The 3rd Reting Rinpoche Ngawang Yeshe Tsultrim Gyaltsen was born in 1816 and passed away at the age of 47.In 1945, the monks of the Sera Monastery swarmed into the Labrang of Tsemon Ling and beat up the then Kalon (cabinet minister), leading to an armed standoff between the monks and the Grand Minister Resident of Tibet.Appointed in the difficult circumstance, the 3rd Reting Rinpoche, who succeeded the 7th Panchen Lama as the regent, quieted down the troubles. He acted as the regent again after the death of the 11th Dalai Lama in 1855.
The 4th Reting Rinpoche Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenpai Gyaltsen used to be the teacher of the 9th Panchen Lama.
The 5th Reting Rinpoche was born of a serf’s family in Gyatsa County of Tibet in 1912 and died in prison in 1947.Sent to the monastery to learn Buddhist Sutras at the age of 3, he was then granted with the name Jampal Yeshe Tenpai Gyaltsen. He passed the exam and got the Larampa Geshe,a degree of Buddhist monastic, at the Great Prayer Festival held in Lhasa in 1931.
The 6th Reting Rinpoche Reting Tenzin Jigme Thubtop Wangchuk was born in Lhasa in 1948 and passed away on February 13, 1997.He didn’t flee to India with Dalai Clique in 1959 and was received by state leaders such as MaoZedong, Liu Shaoqi and Zhou Enlai one year later.He took the positions as an executive member of the council of the Buddhist Association of China (B.A.C), Chairman of Political Consultative Conference of Tibet Autonomous Region and Vice-president of the Tibet Branch of B.A.C.
Chinese government held a ceremony for the enthronement of the 7th Reting Rinpoche Reting Lodro Gyatso Trinley Lhundrup on January 16, 2000.He went to various places ranging from Lhasa, Nyingchi, Shannan to Shigatse for paying respect to Buddha in 2006.
